@Home Interview: Randy Cousin on How Tommy Hilfiger’s People’s Place Program Is Taking Action

In our “@Home Interview” series, we are highlighting our associates from around the world in their work-from-home environments, how they have adapted to our new ways of working, and what they are most looking forward to in this coming year.

Meet Randy Cousin, Senior Vice President of Product Concepts and the People’s Place Program at Tommy Hilfiger

How is the People’s Place Program taking strides toward advancing the representation of BIPOC at Tommy Hilfiger?

Tommy Hilfiger called for bold change in June 2020 in support of the global amplification of the Black Lives Matter movement. We knew we had to take action, and after taking time to listen and understand how we could make a positive difference as a brand, the People’s Place Program was born.

The program takes its name from Tommy’s very first store in Elmira, NY, called People’s Place, and it serves as a platform for meaningful partnerships, shared storytelling, industry mentorship and more. It’s a program committed to true foundational change and action to increase visibility, access and opportunities for the BIPOC community.

What are some key initiatives you are implementing for Tommy’s People’s Place Program?

February is Black History Month, and in celebration of this month and every day after, we are so excited to announce our partnership with the Fashion and Race Database through a research study called “The Unsung History of American Sportswear.” It will be the first time a brand rooted in American sportswear will go on a journey to uncover the dynamic influence of Black American culture on mainstream fashion.

We will also launch collaborative capsule collections with actor, model and LGBTQIA+ activist, Indya Moore, and fashion designer and longtime mentee of Mr. Hilfiger, Romeo Hunte. With the collaborations, Indya and Romeo each give voice to the authentic spirit of individuality and self-expression that they embody.

Looking ahead to the future, what are you most excited for at Tommy Hilfiger?

I am excited to see our brand go on the journey with amazing partners via the People's Program to lead the change we want to see in the industry. Now, more than ever, we need action, and I am incredibly hopeful that our multi-year efforts will take us on a journey of discovery and foundational change in the fashion space. The People's Place Program will start a blueprint of dynamic programming to share with our internal employees, our consumers, and other brands industry wide.
